FUFU Barbeque & Scholarship
From Us For Us barbeque is a time for all Black students, alumni, and faculty and staff to get together and have fun. It gives Black students a chance to meet and socialize with one another, play games, dance, and just enjoy being Black on UT campus - it's truly a celebration. The highlight of the event is awarding 3 to 5 deserving freshmen scholarships.
MLK Celebration(s)
There are two celebrations which honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The fall event celebrates the unveiling of the statue on campus, and the spring event honors his birthday. Both events include distinguished speakers, gospel choirs, and participation in a city-wide march.
Black History Month
The UT Black community sponsors many events to highlight Black history and culture in February. The month begins with an opening ceremony. Past events have included a church service, lectures, Black history bowl, plays, concerts, and ends with the "blow out".
Annual Sweatt Symposium on Civil Rights
This week-long symposium is named in honor of Heman Sweatt (1912-1982), who applied for admission to the UT-Austin School of Law in 1946, but was denied admission on the basis of race. All events are free and open to the public. Past guest speakers have included Johnnie Cochran and Nikki Giovanni, while past events have included a poetry slam, hip-hop forum, and movie screening.
Saturday Night Live (New Student Lock-In)
This annual event helps new students make a smooth transition from high school to college. The event primarily targets freshmen, but it is also open to transfer students. The first event was a lock-in on campus, but over the past years it has expanded to a weekend retreat including an alumnus speaker, recreational activities, and games.
African American Male Summit
This is coordinated by African American males on campus to address issues that affect Black men. One night is dedicated to empowering black men to be responsible for their actions and equipping them to be successful leaders. In the past, only men could attend, but in 2002 women were also invited because they play an important role in the lives of black men.
Parents' Brunch
This is an opportunity for parents to visit campus during UT Parents? Weekend and have brunch with their students. It gives parents a glimpse of what black students are doing on UT campus. The parents also enjoy singing by Innervisions Gospel Choir and performances by selected black students.
